What is a meta tag?

I just thought this might be helpful for some starters. A meta tag is a tag that describes some aspect of the contents of a Web page. The information that you provide in a meta tag is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it. It is also called as Meta elements, Meta elements are HTML or XHTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page. Metadata is data about data. An item of metadata may describe an individual datum, or content item, or a collection of data including multiple content items. Meta elements can be used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata not provided through the other head elements and attributes.
